Belle Vue Hill was acquired by Christo van Rensburg and Angela Todd in July 2003.
It is an 18ha (45ac) new subdivision of the original Harrowfield farm,
which has been in the Cargill family for generations.
It is located just outside Bungendore,
a small town 20 minutes north east of Queanbeyan, NSW, 30 minutes east of Canberra.
The land previously consisted of two paddocks used for grazing beef cattle,
but the new owners are trying to re-establish native vegetation similar to that before European settlement.
Several thousand trees native to the area have already been planted (October 2003), and more will follow next spring
if rainfall permits.
Belle Vue Hill is on the side of one of the higher hills in the area,
and it has a beautiful view of the valley below, Lake George and the Bridabella Hills in the distance.
The farm is close to Canberra, about halfway between Sydney and the ski fields, and an hour away from the beach.
An energy and water efficient, environmentally friendly strawbale guest cottage with mudbrick inner walls is currently being planned, to be constructed by the middle of 2004.
The cottage will have a polished concrete floor to act as thermal mass for heat storage,
and a Colorbond metal roof for rainwater collection.
The cottage will serve as rental and Bed & Breakfast accommodation.
It will have an open plan livingroom, dining room and kitchen, a bathroom, a laundry,
two bedrooms, plus a loft. Sheltered from predominant winds,
the cottage will overlook a dam and future permaculture gardens.
Planning on an energy and water efficient main home has commenced as well,
but it will only be built as in a few years.
